Reading, Pa. (Nov. 8, 2017) - John Jay College (19-12) defeated Alvernia University (16-13) in the opening round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's Volleyball Championship Wednesday evening at the Physical Education Center.
The Bloodhounds posted 25-17 wins in each of the first two sets then finished the match with a 25-19 win in the third.
Alvernia senior Kristen Sipling had a team-high 12 kills for the Golden Wolves. Â She will graduate as the career leader in kills at Alvernia with 1,321, and also claimed the single-season record for kills with 540.
Abby O'Donnell had 24 assists in the match and Sipling led the defense with 10 digs.
John Jay had a 6-2 lead early in the first set then extended to a 13-8 lead and held a comfortable margin the rest of the way.
Alvernia put together a mini run in the second set to take an 11-10 lead, but John Jay responded with four straight points for a 14-11 lead, en route to the 25-17 win.
In the third set, John Jay built an 8-4 lead early and saw Alvernia climb back to within a point at 11-10. Â The Bloodhounds pulled ahead 21-13, but the Golden Wolves had one final push to close the gap to 22-19 before three straight points for the guests closed the match.
John Jay advances to the quarterfinals and will face FDU-Florham on Saturday at 8:00 p.m. at Frostburg State. Â Alvernia wraps up the season having made its first postseason appearance in 10 years.
