BOX SCORE Center Valley, Pa. (Dec. 30, 2017) - Alvernia University (3-8) shot 22 percent from the 3-point arc on a team record 46 attempts and Gettysburg College (3-7) emerged with a 56-50 win Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the Al Senevitis Memorial Men's Basketball Tournament hosted by DeSales University.
Alvernia trailed 17-12 with under seven minutes left in the first half with the first 12 points all coming on 3-point baskets. Â The Golden Wolves were down 21-14 with 2:16 left in the half, but were able to score the final seven points of the half to tie the score at 21-all at halftime.
Alvernia took a five point lead early in the second half on a 3 from Nick Youngkin and pushed that lead to six points, 33-27, on a 3 from Alex Shippen four minutes into the half.
The Golden Wolves went 1-for-5 from the arc against the packed in Bullets' zone over the next four minutes while Gettysburg ran off an 11-3 run to take a 44-39 lead midway through the second half.
Alvernia battled back to take a 47-46 lead on a tip-in from Anthony Hedgepeth with 5:32 to play, but went 1-for-9 from the arc over the final five minutes while Gettysburg finished the game with a 10-3 run.
Alvernia was 10-for-46 from the arc breaking the previous record of 38 attempted 3s for the second time this season---it went 14-for-41 in a home loss to Lycoming in the beginning of December.
The team was find success when it penetrated the Gettysburg zone going 9-for-19 from inside the arc.
Shippen led the team with 17 points and seven assists and was named to the All-Tournament team. Â Youngkin had 14 points and seven boards, and Moultrie finished with 13 points.
