Reading, Pa. (Feb. 1, 2017) - Lycoming College (13-7, 7-5) used a 19-3 fourth quarter run to claim a 70-52 victory over Alvernia University (2-18, 2-10) Wednesday evening in MAC Commonwealth Women's Basketball action on Jack McCloskey Court.
Leading by just two at the start of the fourth quarter, Lycoming pulled ahead 62-51 with just six minutes remaining. Both sides encountered a dry spell over the next three minutes before the Warriors hit an 8-1 streak to close the contest.
The Crusaders held close to the lead through the first three quarters, exchanging the advantage with the Warriors 10 times.
Alvernia took the early lead as
Liv Andrefski knocked down a 3 to start the evening. Back-to-back buckets in the paint switched the advantage to Lycoming, but Andrefski and
Maya Cooper responded with a pair of layups to pull ahead 11-10. Cooper drained another five points in the first quarter to keep Alvernia up until the final seconds when Lycoming made a pair from the line for the 17-16 margin.
The second quarter followed suit as the 3-pointer proved to be Alvernia's biggest ally with beyond the arc buckets from
Kiersten Ingram, Andrefski and Cooper causing all three of the Crusader lead changes throughout the quarter. The Warriors held a 37-31 margin at the two minute mark, but an Ingram layup and
Miranda Hoover jumper brought the Crusaders within two at the half.
Alvernia and Lycoming mirrored each other in the third as both sides put away 14 points, leaving Lycoming up 51-49 entering the final frame.
The Crusaders received double-digit scoring performances from four players as Hoover and Cooper posted 11 points each and Ingram and Andrefski added 10 a piece. Hoover collected the double-double on the evening, pulling down 10 boards.
