Owings Mill, Md. (Feb. 14, 2017) - Senior
Marquis Marshall scored a game-high 33 points to lead Alvernia University (15-9, 9-6) to a 94-77 win over Stevenson University (4-20, 2-13) Tuesday evening in MAC Commonwealth men's basketball action at Stevenson.
Marshall helped set a different tone for a team that struggled against the Stevenson zone defense in a home loss earlier this season. Â He hit the first two 3s he looked at helping the Crusaders out to a 10-7 lead then knocked down his third and final 3 of the night with 12:24 left in the first half for a 22-15 lead.
George Williams and
Mike Miller hit back-to-back 3s as the Crusaders pushed their lead up to 13 points and the guests settled for a 45-31 lead at the halftime break. Â Marshall led the way with 20 points over the first 20 minutes and sophomore
Reid Hoff had a game-high eight assists at the half.
The lead grew to 19 points early in the second half and Alvernia held the lead in double-figures the rest of the way.
Hoff finished with a career-high tying nine assists, Williams had a big double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds,
Alex Shippen had 16 points, and Miller finished with 13. Â Stevenson got a team-best 31 from Cameron Hayes.
The Alvernia win combined with other results around the league on Tuesday set the five teams who will qualify for the postseason. Â Lycoming has locked down the top seed with Alvernia, Albright, Lebanon Valley, and Widener filling out the remaining four spots in some order.
Alvernia and Widener face off in the final game of the regular season on Saturday.  The winner will be the #2 seed and host a semifinal.  Alvernia would be #3 if Albright were to lose to Messiah or #4 if Albright wins.
Alvernia has qualified for the MAC postseason for the sixth time in eight years under head coach
Mike Miller. Â The Crusaders have four appearances in the final and four titles in the previous five appearances in the championships.
