Union, NJ (Mar. 17, 2017) - #17/23 Alvernia University (9-1) came up just short of #23 Kean University (9-5), falling 1-0 in non-conference baseball action at Kean.
The Cougars manufactured the game's only run in the third, using a leadoff double and a sacrifice bunt to put the game winning run on third. Ivan Rivera then delivered Kean's lone RBI with a single to left.
The Crusaders threatened to answer in the top of the fourth as Franco Esposito reached by way of a hit by pitch to open the inning.  Cameron Coons then roped a single to left before Alex Salesky loaded the bases with a two-out single. However, Alvernia was unable to convert the run.
The Crusaders had another opportunity to score in the final frame as Esposito led off with a single, but Kean closer Richie Ferguson induced a double-play ball to keep Alvernia off the board.
Coons led the way offensively for Alvernia, Â going 2-for-4 at the plate.Â
Dillon Dunne suffered the loss on the mound despite a solid outing, allowing just six hits and one walk in seven innings of work.
Alvernia returns to the diamond on Monday as it begins MAC Commonwealth action traveling to Hood College for a single game. First pitch is set for 3:30.
