Reading, Pa. (Apr. 11, 2017) - #11 Alvernia University (21-4-1) scored in six of eight innings in a 20-15 win over Rutgers-Newark (15-6) Tuesday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at Angelica Park.
Newark opened with a 4-spot in the first inning and took a 5-0 lead with a run in the second before the Alvernia bats came alive.
The Crusaders struck for seven runs in the second and scored single runs in the third and fourth for a 9-5 lead, but just as quickly as it came, the lead was gone when Newark posted an 8 in the top of the fifth for a 13-9 lead.
Alvernia took a chunk out of that lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, took a breather in the home half of the sixth, then scored four runs in the seventh and four more in the eighth. Â
Ben Dubas, who finished with eight RBIs, knocked in three runs in each inning. Â He clubbed a 3-run homer in the seventh then a bases-clearing triple in the eighth.
Dubas became the third player in school history to have eight RBIs in a game, joining Ben Sawyer and Steve DeBarberie.  They are all a grand slam short of the school record set by Todd Meyer when he hit for the home run cycle on April 16, 2002.
The Alvernia bullpen was the beneficiary of all the run support with
Frank Merlino picking up his first win going an inning and two-thirds, and
Antonio Baglivo earning the save throwing the final two frames.
Nathan Sides paced the offense from the leadoff position going 5-for-6 at the plate including the 100th hit of his career. Â Sides is the fifth player in school history to have multiple 5-hit games and the third to do it twice in a season. Â He ripped into Hood for five hits back on March 20.
Alvernia and Newark will face off again on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. in a game to be played at Kean University.
