Owings Mill, MD (Apr. 23, 2017) - Stevenson University (17-18) took a pair of one-run wins over #12/15 Alvernia University (23-10-2) in MAC Commonwealth baseball action Sunday afternoon at Stevenson.
After the Crusaders crossed the game-tying run in game one in the top of the seventh on a wild pitch, Stevenson used a two-out bases loaded single to plate the game winner.
Alvernia scored its first run in the third as
Ian Shaffer came in on a
Colin Rieger triple to right center.
Stevenson pulled ahead 2-1 in the bottom half of the frame, but the Crusaders pushed across the equalizer in the top of the fourth on a
Dillon Dunne fielder's choice RBI that brought in
Ben Dubas, who led off the inning with a single.
The Mustangs regained the lead 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth.
Thomas Malik went six complete innings on the mound, scattering seven hits with five strikeouts.
Nicholas Marotta suffered the loss, allowing one hit and a walk in the seventh.
In the nightcap, Alvernia took an early 3-0 advantage, posting a run in the first and a pair in the second.
Matt Briner delivered an RBI single up the middle in the first for the 1-0 go ahead, and Sides extended the lead the following inning, driving the ball throught the right side to bring around
Kyle Gaynor and
Alex Salesky.
Stevenson answered with a trio of runs in the bottom of the second, capitalizing on a pair of hit batters and a throwing miscue by the Crusaders.
The two sides exchanged runs in the third and fourth, pushing the score 7-7. Two of Alvernia's three runs in the fourth came courtesy of
Franco Esposito, who drove in
Nathan Sides and
Mike Cirilli.
The Mustangs used a sac fly in the bottom of the sixth to take the 8-7 margin before holding the Crusaders scoreless in the seventh after Shaffer led off the inning with a walk.
Alvernia used three pitchers in game two, with
Zack Landy suffering the loss. The trio, comprised of Dunne,
Antonio Baglivo, and Landy, allowed nine hits with three walks.
The Crusaders face Stevenson again tomorrow, hosting the Mustangs for a single game at 3:30 pm.
