Williamsport, Pa. (Jan. 31, 2018) - Eleventh-ranked Lycoming College (19-2, 10-2) held Alvernia University (9-11, 4-7) to 28 points after the break in a 79-66 win Wednesday evening in MAC Commonwealth men's basketball action at Lamade Gymnasium.
The Golden Wolves were a blistering 10-for-22 from the 3-point line in the first half and trailed the top team in the conference by just a bucket at halftime, 40-38.
Alvernia senior Alex Shippen hit a 3 to tie the score at 46-all with 14:46 left in the game, but Lycoming answered with a 12-1 run over the next three-plus minutes to take control. Â The first three buckets of the run were second chance points with TJ Duckett's 3 giving the hosts a 53-46 lead. Â
Alvernia stayed in the battle of the boards in the first half with Lycoming owning 24-19 edge in rebounds of the first 20 minutes, but the Warriors pulled down 11 offensive boards in the decisive second half.
A 3 from Shippen with just over five minutes to play pulled Alvernia back to within nine points at 70-61, and a defensive stop followed, but after a miss in the paint, Lycoming slowed down the pace on offense and turned up the pressure on defense getting a steal and a dunk from Chris Wallace to push the gap back to double figures where it stayed the rest of the way.
Mike Miller led the way for Alvernia with 28 points going 8-for-14 from the 3-point line. Â Shippen finished with 15 points, five rebounds, and seven assists, and Nick Youngkin had 14 points. Â Ramadan Jennings led the Warriors with 25 points.
Alvernia returns home for a crucial game against Messiah College this Saturday.
