BOX SCORE Reading, Pa. (Jan. 9, 2018) - Freshman center Kyle Gordon has his second big double-double of the season and senior Mike Miller scored a game-high 23 to lead Alvernia University (6-8) to a 77-72 win over Penn State-Wilkes-Barre (8-5) Tuesday evening in non-conference men's basketball at Jack McCloskey Court.
Miller poured in 17 points in the second half and Gordon did the majority of his 16-point, 18-rebound work after the break as Alvernia scored 45 points in the last 20 minutes to turn an 11-point deficit into the five point win.
PSU lead 60-47 with 13:20 left in the game, but hit a cold spell going 0-for-8 from the floor with a turnover while Alvernia ran off 15 straight points to take a 62-60 lead with 8:20 to play. Â Miller got it started with a pair of free throws, but freshman sub Keon Taylor really energized the run scoring six straight points in a 90-second stretch.
Miller floated a pass to Gordon for a finish that cut the gap to 60-57 then Miller drove to the hoop for a three point play on a reverse layup that tied the score at 60-all.
Nik Henson's layup with 8:20 to go gave Alvernia its first lead of the night, 62-60.
PSU pulled within a point on four occasions over the next four minutes, but Alvernia had an answer every time and eventually built a 73-67 lead on a 3 from Alex Shippen with 2:51 to play.
The Lions got a layup to cut it back to four, but neither team scored for better than two minutes until Miller hit a pair of free throws with 33 seconds to go.
Shippen reached double figures with 13 points. Â Wilkes-Barre put a pair of players in double figures led by Jordan Williams who tallied 21.
Alvernia finishes off a stretch of three home games in a four day span hosting Widener University in MAC Commonwealth action on Wednesday.
