Owings Mill, Md. (Oct. 30, 2018) - Fourth-seeded Stevenson University (11-7-1) scored the game-winner in the 88th minute of a 3-2 win over #5 Alvernia University (8-11-2) Tuesday evening in the play-in game of the MAC Commonwealth Men's Soccer Championships at Mustang Stadium.
Pete Wickiser chased down a lose ball 25 yards from the end line and turned and served it back toward the middle of the box. Â The ball found Jay Smith who chested it down and finished off his eighth of the season.
Alvernia scored the opener in the fifth minute when
Austin Young scored his third of the season assisted by
Ryan Kuster. Â The goal held through the first half with Alvernia taking the 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
The Mustangs tied the score less than two minutes into the second half when DJ Medtart ripped a shot through traffic from well outside the box that caromed in off the left post. Â Eleven minutes later the Mustangs took a short corner and another shot from outside the box that found its way to Jason Kahan who deflected it in for a 2-1 lead.
Alvernia tied it at 2-2 in the 67th minute when the combo on the first goal reversed roles. Â Young served the corner to the back post and Kuster rose above his defender to head the ball past the Mustangs keeper.

Luca Grippi came up huge stuffing a penalty kick attempt from Smith with under 10 minutes to play, but the Mustangs' pressure eventually resulted in the game-winner.
Stevenson advances to face top-seeded Messiah College on Thursday night in a semifinal. Â #3 Lebanon Valley will travel to #2 Lycoming for the other semifinal.
