Biddeford, Me. (Nov. 10, 2018) – The University of New England (2-8) scored three touchdowns in the first five minutes of the third quarter on its way to a 42-27 win over Alvernia University (1-9) Saturday afternoon in a non-conference football game between two teams finishing up their inaugural season.
UNE took the first drive of the second half 62 yards on four plays and broke a 21-all tie with a 2-yard run from Devon Charles. A sack on Alvernia's first play in the third put the Golden Wolves behind the chains and when the punt team couldn't get off the punt on fourth down it set up UNE at the 3-yard line.
Jack Mahoney punched it in on the first play then another failed punt attempt for the Wolves led to another short field and a quick score for the Nor'easters.
Alvernia put together a 15-play, 80-yard touchdown drive from the end of the third quarter into the fourth and cut the gap to 42-27 with 9:51 left in the game when
Malcolm Carey rumbled in from 19 yards out for his second score of the game.
UNE missed a 27-yard field goal attempt with 2:37 left and Alvernia drove down to the 9-yard line, but
Keiron Black's first down pass was picked off in the endzone.
Carey led the Alvernia offense with a career-high 252 yards on 46 attempts. Black was 7-for-14 and
Jake Dilcher was 4-for-9 for 52 yards and a touchdown.
Neeko Scurlock hauled in six passes for 49 yards and his first career touchdown.
Alvernia scored on its first two drives to take a 14-0 lead early. Carey got the call on the first three players going for seven yards then 40 and five to put the ball at the UNE 22. Dilcher's first attempt of the game hit Scurlock at the 7 and he broke a tackle for the opening score.
UNE went three and out on its first possession and Alvernia went 71 yards on seven plays with Dilcher scampering in from 30 yards out on a 4th and 1 play.
UNE answered on its next drive, but the extra point attempt was blocked.
Alvernia's next possession went three and out and the snap on the punt sailed over
Mitchell Kerrick's head and he was forced to kick it out the back of the endzone for a safety.
The teams exchanged punts before UNE went 59 yards on six plays to tie the score at 14-all early in the second quarter.
Alvernia took a 21-14 lead on Carey's first touchdown of the day with 9:27 left in the second quarter and UNE scored for a 21-all tie with 4:39 left in the quarter.
