Reading, Pa. (Nov. 14, 2018) - Alvernia University (1-1) scored 17 straight points to close the first quarter on its way to a 76-62 win over Penn State-Berks (0-1) Wednesday evening in non-conference women's basketball action at Jack McCloskey Court.
Berks hit a 3-point basket just over two minutes into the game to take a 5-2 lead and Alvernia held them off the board for the rest of the quarter going for 17 straight points to take a 19-5 lead after the first 10 minutes.
Dej'hanee McNeal scored the first four points of the run for the Wolves and
Torie Zerbe added four.
Berks stopped the Alvernia run with the first bucket of the second quarter, but Alvernia got two 3s from
Gabriella DeVito and another from
Maya Cooper to open up its largest lead of the game at 36-9 with 4:53 left in the first half.
Berks closed the half with nine of the last 11 points to hit the halftime break down 38-19.
Berks scored the first six points of the third quarter to close the gap, but DeVito knocked down a 3 to stop the run. Â The Wolves had the lead up to 20 points on a
Kiersten Ingram 3 and took a 59-39 lead after the third quarter.
Alvernia had the lead up 23 points early in the fourth and kept it above 12 until the final minutes.
DeVito and Ingram led the Wolves with 16 points each Cooper finished with 14 points and nine assists.
Alvernia continues the home stand with the Nonno Alby's Tip-Off Tournament this coming weekend. Â Washington College and Ohio Wesleyan tip in the opener at 2:00 Saturday. Alvernia opens with Penn State-Schuylkill at 4:00. Â The consolation game is Sunday at 1:00 and the championship at 3:00.
