Late Run Carries Hood Past Alvernia, 75-72

Youngkin Scores Game-High 22

BOX SCORE Frederick, Md. (Nov. 28, 2018) - Hood College (6-1, 1-0) ran off 11 straight points to take a late lead and held on for a 75-72 win over Alvernia University (3-3, 0-1) Wednesday evening in MAC Commonwealth men's basketball action at Hood.

The Golden Wolves led 63-53 with 8:30 to play and 67-60 with 4:25 to play.

Hood went 4-for-5 from the floor over the next three minutes while Alvernia missed five straight and with 50 seconds to go the Blazers were up four.

Malik Green hit a 3 from the top of the arc to stop Alvernia's scoreless streak, but Hood went 4-for-4 from the free throw line to stay in front.

Nick Youngkin scored a game-high 22 to lead Alvernia.  Green finished with a double-double scoring 15 points to go with 11 rebounds.  Keon Taylor was effective running the point. He finished with 12 points, eight rebounds, and five assists, but fouled out with more than seven minutes left in the game.

Youngkin knocked down 3s on the first two Alvernia possessions around one from Hood's Jared Ruiz.  The Blazers were hot from the arc over the first nine minutes going 8-for-12 from the arc and pulling ahead 26-16 with 10:50 left in the half.

As hot as they were to start, the Blazers couldn't buy from from long range going 1-for-9 for the rest of the half while Alvernia rattled off a 19-7 run to take a 35-33 lead at the break.  Youngkin led the way with 11 points for the Golden Wolves and Green added 10.

Hood scored six points in 13 seconds of the second half on a pair of 3s from Mason Wang, but Alvernia pieced together its second significant run of the game outscoring Hood 17-4 to turn a 39-35 deficit into a 52-43 lead with 14:21 to play.

The lead hit 10 points on a Youngkin layup with 12:03 to go and was 10 points again, 63-53, on a Rob Young, Jr. 3.

Anthony Pearson led three players in double figures for the Blazers with 21.

Alvernia continues the conference schedule Saturday when it hosts Widener University.
