Ithaca, NY (Nov. 7, 2018) – Ithaca College (13-6) scored a goal in the opening minutes of the second half to break a 1-1 tie and take a 2-1 win over Alvernia University (11-9) in the ECAC Quarterfinals on Wednesday evening at Ithaca.
The Bombers opened up the scoring late in the 15th minute when Kristen Rafferty tapped in a ball off the left post following a scramble.
The Golden Wolves tied it up in 24th minute when they were granted a penalty stroke opportunity.
Brianna Buckley took the stroke for Alvernia, firing left while the goalie dove right.
The Bombers had several scoring opportunities in the closing minutes of the first half, including an untimed corner, but the Golden Wolves held them off.
Ithaca was able to break the 1-1 tie early in the 39th minute with a one time shot off by Arleigh Rodgers to give the Bombers the 2-1 advantage with just over 30 minutes to play.
The Golden Wolves had an offensive surge in the final 30 minutes. Alvernia fired off 15 shots, seven of which were on goal, in the second half, but the shots were either saved or just off the mark.
Ithaca possessed the ball in the final 90 seconds, giving the Bombers the 2-1 win.
Alvernia is eliminated from the ECAC tournament. The Golden Wolves finished their season 11-9 overall. The Bombers will advance to the semifinal and will play #1 Arcadia who defeated #4 Wilson 10-0 this evening.
