Trujillo Alto, PR (Dec. 20, 2018) - Edgewood College took an early 14-point lead and led wire-to-wire in a 53-45 victory over Alvernia University on Thursday afternoon in non-conference women's basketball action in Puerto Rico.
Edgewood outscored the Golden Wolves 14-4 in the first quarter and held the 28-15 advantage heading into the half.
Dej'hanee McNeal hit back-to-back layups to cut the Eagles lead down to nine coming out of the break. Edgewood responded and extended the lead back to 15 with 4:11 left in the third quarter.
The Eagles and Golden Wolves traded baskets to close out the third quarter, with Edgewood holding the 39-29 advantage entering the final ten minutes.
Maya Cooper hit a layup to open the fourth quarter to cut the deficit down to eight, but the Eagles came right back to extend their lead back to 15 with 4:22 left to play.
Alvernia went on a 9-2 run to end out the game, but the Eagles lead was too much to overcome as the Golden Wolves fell 53-35.
Gabriella DeVito and
Maya Cooper each scored eight points for the Golden Wolves. DeVito also had eight rebounds and McNeal finished with a team-high nine rebounds.
Edgewood had a pair of players reach double digits, with Abby Shane posting a team-high 11 points.
Alvernia has off for the holiday and will return to the court on December 30th when they travel to Penn State Harrisburg.
