Messiah Handles Alvernia, 71-21

Reading, Pa. (Feb. 3, 2018) - Messiah College (19-11, 11-1) used a 28 point second quarter to propel themselves to a 71-21 victory over Alvernia University (4-17, 0-12) during MAC Commonwealth action at Alvernia's Jack McCloskey Court.

Both Messiah and Alvernia came out of the gate slow, with both teams committing turnovers and missing shots early.

Alvernia was first to get on the board with a Liv Andrefski jumper with just over seven minutes left in the first quarter.

Messiah answered with a jumper of its own, and would go on a 14-0 run over the next six minutes.

Freshman Gabriella DeVito put an end to Messiah's early run when she dropped a three with about a minute remaining in the first quarter.

Alvernia's offense struggled in the second quarter, and Messiah took advantage. The Falcons outscored the Golden Wolves 28-5 in the quarter, with Alvernia making just two field goals over the ten minute span.

The Golden Wolves shooting again struggled coming out of the half. Abbie Zerbe's two made free throws in the fourth minute of the quarter were the only Alvernia points in the first eight minutes of the third quarter.

Messiah capped off the game with an 11 point fourth quarter to take the 71-21 lead.

Every player on the Messiah roster was able to produce for the Falcons. Messiah was led by Kaitlyn Hoff who scored 16 points, and notched her 1,000th career point late in the first half. Alecia Rohrer collected a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

DeVito came off the bench to lead the Golden Wolves with seven points. Freshman Julia Ewen finished the game with seven a rebounds.

Alvernia returns to the court on Wednesday when they travel across town to take on Albright College.
