Reading, Pa. (March 18, 2018) - Alvernia University (11-3, 3-0) used an eight run seventh inning to power past Albright College (5-5, 0-3) on its way to sweeping the series and taking a 16-2 win in MAC Commonwealth baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Albright.
Alvernia opened the scoring with a two run inning in the bottom of the second.
Matt Briner scored the first run of the day on a throwing error by Albright's catcher, who was attempting to throw out
Ben Dubas on a steal attempt.
Franco Esposito followed that with a single to right field to drive in Dubas.
Albright cut Alvernia's lead in half in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI groundout to short to score Noah Bebe.
The Golden Wolves added two to their lead in the top of the fifth. The first run of the inning came with two runners on and no outs.
Dillon Dunne came up to lay down at sacrifice bunt, but a throwing error allowed Dunne to reach safely and
Marcus Celiano to score. In the following at bat,
Colin Rieger grounded out to short, driving in
Alex Salesky.
Franco Esposito knocked a double to center field in the top of the sixth to score Dubas and give Alvernia a 5-1 lead.
The Golden Wolves had a huge seventh inning, sending 13 men to the plate and scoring eight runs to extend their lead to 13-1. Briner scored the first two runs of the inning with a single center to score Rieger and Dunne. Dubas followed that with an RBI single to right to bring in
Nathan Sides.
Marcus Celiano then sent a single back to the pitcher to load the bases and score Briner. Dubas came home on a fielder's choice by
Alex Salesky, and Dunne then singled to right to score Salesky. Not to be left out of the scoring frenzy,
Mike Cirilli capped off the big inning with a single to right to drive in Dunne.
Alvernia capitalized on Albright mistakes in the top of the eighth to add three more runs to its lead.
Logan Saunders singled to left,
Logan Levan doubled to left, and
Francisco Reyes singled up the middle to bring in three and give Alvernia the 16-2 lead.
Briner and Dubas each had to hits and scored three runs a piece to lead Alvernia, and Dubas's RBI in the seventh put him over the 100 career RBI milestone.
Sean Esch pitched seven innings for the Golden Wolves and struck out five to pick up his first career win.
The Golden Wolves will play their fourth game in three days when they host Kean on Monday afternoon.
