Frederick, Md. (Mar. 31, 2018) - Junior Thomas Malik came up big with six-plus innings on the mound in game one and the offense came alive in game two as Alvernia University (15-6, 7-1) swept a doubleheader at Hood College (18-3, 5-3) Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth baseball.
Marcus Celiano tripled and drove in a run in the second inning game one and Malik made it stand going six and two-thirds innings allowing four hits while striking out five. Â Michael Griffin came in to get the last out of the game retiring pinch hitter Eric Turner on a grounder to short.
Nate Luscombe threw all seven innings for the Blazers taking the loss allowing just one run on four hits with five strikeouts.
Seven different players had a hit apiece between the two teams in the first game.
Game two was a different story from the top of the first inning.
Alvernia scored four times on two hits and two Hood errors. Â Franco Esposito delivered the big blow, a two-run single to left that drove in Matt Briner and Nathan Sides.
Hood scored a run in the bottom of the first--aided by an Alvernia error--but the Golden Wolves got that back and another with two runs in the top of the second. Â Sides doubled home Dillon Dunne then Briner followed with another double to drive in Sides.
Alvernia batted around in the third scoring five more runs to take an 11-1 lead. Â Mike Cirilli, Sides, and Briner delivered three straight run-scoring singles for the Wolves.
Junior starter John Catchmark went four innings to pick up the win. Â He surrendered two runs--one earned--on six hits with five strikeouts.
Briner finished game two 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Â Esposito and Ian Shaffer also had two hits in the game.
Alvernia returns home to face The College on New Jersey on Monday in a rescheduled game.
