BOX SCORE 2 Ft. Myers, Fl. (March 4, 2018) - Alvernia University (2-2) swept the first day of spring break baseball action with wins against Elms College (0-5) in Fort Myers, Florida on Sunday.
The Golden Wolves took an early 4-0 lead in game one of the double header and never looked back on their way to 10-2 victory. In the second game of the day, a grand slam by
Dillon Dunne powered the Golden Wolves to a 7-2 win.
In the morning game, the bats game alive early in the first inning for the Golden Wolves. A grounder to third scored
Hunter Hart, who reached earlier in the inning on a single. In the next at bat,
Mike Cirilli, who reached on an error, scored on a
Ben Dubas single. In the following at bat,
Colin Rieger reached on an error by the Elm's third baseman, allowing Nate Sides, who singled in his at bat, and Dubas to score, giving Alvernia a 4-0 lead.
In the fifth inning, Alvernia scored three more to give the Golden Wolves a 7-0 lead. A Â double by Sides opened up the scoring by bringing home Cirilli, who singled in the first at bat of the inning. A single by Dubas scored sides.
Alex Salesky then reached on an error to bring home Dubas.
In the sixth,
Matt Briner had an two run RBI to give Alvernia a 9-0 lead. In the seventh, Dunne drove in
Ethan Francis to give Alvernia a 10-0 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.
Elms got two back on the Golden Wolves in the bottom of the 7th to take away Nick Marotta's shut out opportunity.
Marotta pitched a complete game, collecting seven strikeouts and allowing just three hits.
In game two, Elms got out to an early 1-0 lead and held the lead until the bottom of the fourth.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Golden Wolves loaded the bases with two walks and a hit by pitch. Dunne took advantage of the bases loaded opportunity to blast a grand slam and give the Golden Wolves a 4-1 lead.
The Golden Wolves scored three more across the fifth and sixth inning.
Ian Shaffer had an RBI single in the fifth to score
Matt Briner. In the sixth, Rieger reached on an error to score Dunne, and Cirilli had a sac fly to score Rieger.
The Golden Wolves continue day two of their spring break trip with a morning game against Thiel College.
