BOX SCORE Ft. Myers, Fl. (March 7, 2018) - Alvernia University (4-3) held on for a 6-3 win over Otterbein University (4-4) in spring break non-conference baseball action in Fort Myers, Florida.
The Cardinals had the game tying run at the plate in the top of the eight, but were unable to convert.
The Golden Wolves took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second with a bases clearing single to right field from
Hunter Hart. Hart drove home
Marcus Celiano, who walked, and
Ben Dubas, who reached on an error in the first at bat of the inning.
Celiano tacked on a run for Alvernia in the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer to right field to take a 3-0 lead.
Alvernia added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 5-0.
Franco Esposito had a bases clearing single to left to score Dubas, who reached on a double, and
Matt Briner, who walked and was advanced to third by Dubas.
The Golden Wolves added their final run in the bottom of the sixth.
Nathan Sides drove in
Alex Salesky with a single to left field. Salesky reached in the first at bat of the inning with a single through the right side.
Alvernia entered the top of the seventh with a 6-0 lead and relied on its defense to finish out the game.
Otterbein got three back on Alvernia in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs with a bases clearing triple from Ben Beachy.
The Cardinals again threatened in the top of the eighth.
Frank Merlino struck out the first two cardinals of the inning, but a hit by pitch put a runner on first. A single to right field put runners on the corners for the cardinals, but the Golden Wolves forced a fly out to end the inning.
Kyle Ganor took the mound in the top of the ninth for the Golden Wolves and faced just forced three quick outs to pick up the save and give Alvernia its fourth win of the season.
Brian Kane picked up the win for the Golden Wolves, allowing seven hits and striking out three in four innings of relief.
Salesky led the Golden Wolves at the plate with three hits and Esposito and Hart had two RBIs a piece.
The Golden Wolves continue their spring break schedule on Thursday with a noon game against Baldwin Wallace.
