BOX SCORE Ft. Myers, Fl. (March 8, 2018) - Alvernia University (5-3) used home runs from
Nathan Sides and
Ian Shaffer to power past Baldwin Wallace (8-2) for an 8-6 win in spring break baseball action in Ft. Myers, Florida.
The Golden Wolves got on the board first with an RBI single from
Matt Briner to score Sides in the top of the first.
The Yellow Jackets answered in the bottom of the second to tie it up at one apiece.
Alvernia capitalized on Baldwin Wallace mistakes in the top of the third to build a 3-1 lead.
Hunter Hart reached base on a triple and scored during the next at bat on a passed ball.
Mike Cirilli was then walked and advanced to second on an error.
Matt Briner then reached on an error, scoring Cirilli on the play, and putting the Golden Wolves up by two.
Sides blasted a two-run homerun in the top of the fifth, scoring Hart, who reached on a single, and putting Alvernia up 5-2.
The Yellow Jackets got one back on a sac fly in the bottom of the fifth to cut Alvernia's lead to two.
The Golden Wolves came right back in the top of the sixth.
Ben Dubas started off the inning with a double and, two at bats later, Shaffer went deep with the two run homer. Later in the inning, Cirilli brought home
Alex Salesky, who reached earlier on a single, and put the Golden Wolves up 8-3.
Baldwin Wallace scored three over the sixth and seventh innings to get within three, but Alvernia was able to hold on for the 8-6 win.
Zack Landy struck out three over six innings to earn the win.
Kyle Gaynor came in for the final two outs to earn his second consecutive save.
Alvernia closes out its spring break stint on Friday with a double header against Defiance College starting at 9:00 AM.
