Alvernia Takes Two from Defiance

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 Ft. Myers, Fl. (March 9, 2018) - Alvernia University (7-3) swept a pair of games against Defiance College (4-5) on the final day of the Golden Wolves spring break trip to Ft. Myers, Florida.

The Golden Wolves took a 10-5 win in the first game of the day and a 4-2 win to close out the day.

In the first game of the day, Alvernia struck first with a Nathan Sides single to bring home Colin Rieger, who reached in the first at bat of the game.

The Yellow Jackets came right back and answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first to tie it up at one all.

Alvernia pulled ahead in the top of the third with a three running in. Ian Shaffer started off the scoring with an RBI single to left to score Sides, who reached on a single. Logan Saunders drove in the second run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to bring home Matt Briner. Dillon Dunne capped of the inning with a double to left center to drive in Franco Esposito.

The Golden Wolves had another big inning in the top of the fifth, scoring four runs to go up 8-1. Alvernia loaded the bases during the first four at bats. Cirilli then walked with the bases loaded to bring home Shaffer. In the next at bat, Sides also walked, scoring Alex Salesky. Briner followed that with a two-run single to drive in Cirilli and Rieger.

The Yellow Jackets matched Alvernia's four run inning with one of their own, but were unable to catch the Golden Wolves.

Alvernia added two more in the top of the sixth to up 10-5. Zach Zellers scoring on a wild pitch and Shaffer scoring on a sac fly from Salesky.

Nicholas Marotta picked up the win, allowing five runs over four and a third.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Alvernia struck first in the bottom of third with a Briner single to left to drive in Cirilli.

Defiance answered in the top of the fourth, scoring two to take a 2-1 lead.

Alvernia tied it up in its half of the fourth, with Salesky knocking a single up the middle to drive in Dubas.

The Golden Wolves broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth with Rieger and Sides scoring on a Shaffer hit to shortstop that forced an error.

Aaron Kulp pitched five innings and struck out eight to pick up the win.

With the two wins, Alvernia finished its spring break trip with a 7-1 record.

The Golden Wolves return home and will host Manhattanville on Tuesday at 3:00 PM.
