Reading, Pa. (Mar. 9, 2018) - Alvernia University (9-9) split a pair of matches Friday evening in non-conference men's volleyball action at the Physical Education Center.
The Golden Wolves needed a comeback for a 3-1 win over Wilson College (6-4) in the opener then fell 3-0 to Wentworth Institute of Technology (15-6) in the nightcap.
Alvernia had a set point at 25-24 in the first set against WIT, but the Leopards closed with three straight points for a 27-25 win. Â WIT kept the momentum rolling with a 25-10 win in the second set and finished the match with a 25-17 win in the third set.
Wilson opened the first match of the night with a 25-22 win over Alvernia but saw the Golden Wolves answer with a 25-22 win in the second set to level the match. Â Logan McGinley hammered down a kill to break a 22-all tie and Victor de Avila served back-to-back aces to finish off the set.
In the third set Alvernia ran out to an early 4-0 lead and won 25-18. Â Ralph Lunati III broke a 21-21 tie in the fourth set and ended the match with another kill. Â He led the team--and tied his career best--with 19 kills in the first match. Justin Gibbs had 42 assists and 14 digs.
