Jersey City, N.J. (Apr. 10, 2018) - Rutgers-Newark (9-15) scored two runs in the ninth to tie the game and another in the home half of the 11th inning to beat Alvernia University (18-9) 4-3 Tuesday afternoon in non-conference baseball at Jaroschak Field.
Dillon Dunne drew a leadoff walk and later scored on a sacrifice fly from
Matt Briner in the top of the first inning to put Alvernia up 1-0. Newark tied the score at 1-1 with a run in the second, but Dunne tripled with one out in the third and scored on a bunt single from
Mike Cirilli.
Senior
Ben Dubas homered to right with two out in the top of the sixth to stretch the lead to 3-1.
Newark put a runner on to open the bottom of the ninth when the leadoff batter was hit by a pitch. The second batter of the inning reached on an error and after a wild pitch, pinch hitter Ross Halkias tied the game with a two-run double.
Aaron Kulp was able to work around a pair of baserunners in the bottom of the 10th, but after a walk and a single to start the bottom of the 11th, Newark was able to end the game on a sac fly.
Dunne finished the game 1-for-2 with three walks and two runs. Cirilli had the only multi-hit game for the Wolves going 2-for-5.
Zack Landy started and went seven innings for Alvernia giving up one run on five hits with seven strikeouts and earned a no decision.
Alvernia returns to MAC Commonwealth action on Friday at Widener.
