Offense Comes Alive, Alvernia Sweeps Widener Series

Dubas Hits a Home Run and a Grand Slam in Game One of the Doubleheader

Reading, Pa. (April 14, 2018) - Alvernia University (21-9, 12-3) completed the MAC Commonwealth series sweep against Widener University (13-15, 7-8) with 12-6 and 7-3 wins over the Pride on Saturday at Alvernia.

Alvernia jumped out to an early lead in game one and, behind the bat of Ben Dubas, never looked back on its way to 12-6 win.

The Golden Wolves faced a two run deficit in game two before a five run sixth inning powered them past the Pride.

Alvernia got on the board first in game one, with a two run second inning. Dubas opened the scoring with a first pitch solo home run to right field in the first at bat of the inning. Alex Salesky scored the second run of the inning after walking, advancing to third on a Colin Rieger double, and then coming home on a wild pitch.

The Golden Wolves extended their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third with Nathan Sides also scoring on a wild pitch.

The Pride cut Alvernia's lead down to just one run with a two run top of the fourth.

The Golden Wolves then blew open the lead with a five run bottom of the fifth. In the first three at bats of the inning, Logan Levan walked, Sides doubled, and Briner walked to load the bases. Dubas then took Kade Jones, who had just entered in relief, deep with a grand slam off the right field foul pole. Rieger capped off the inning with his second double of the game to drive in Hunter Hart and put the Golden Wolves up 8-2.

Alvernia's bats weren't done yet, as the Golden Wolves came out in the sixth firing again with back to back triples to right field from Sides and Marcus Celiano to start off the inning. Hart then knocked a sacrifice fly to center field to score Celiano, and Francisco Reyes singled down the left field line to score Ian Shaffer and put Alvernia up 12-2.

The Pride scored four in the top of the 7th, but Alvernia was able to hang on for the 12-6 win.

Thomas Malik threw six and two thirds for the Golden Wolves, striking out eight and allowing six runs. Frank Merlino came in to get the final out for the Golden Wolves.

In game two of the doubleheader, Alvernia again got out to an early lead.

Dillon Dunne drove in the first run of the game for Alvernia with a single to right field to drive in Alex Salesky and put the Golden Wolves up 1-0 after three.

The Pride answered with a three run inning in the top of the fourth to take a 3-1 advantage.

Alvernia got one back with Rieger hitting a single through the left side to score Hart.

The Golden Wolves bats came alive in the bottom of the sixth, with Alvernia batting around and platting five. Celiano opened the scoring in the inning with a single through the right side to score Connor Boyle and Sides. Shaffer then layed down a bunt for a base hit to bring home Dubas. Zach Zellers scored the fourth run of the inning on a throwing error by the Pride. Rieger capped off the big inning with a single through the left side to score Shaffer.

Alvernia forced Widener into a double play in the top of the 7th and John Catchmark struck out the final batter to give Alvernia the 7-3 victory and series sweep of the Pride.

Catchmark threw a complete game and struck out seven to pick up his third win on the season.

Alvernia sits atop the MAC Commonwealth standings with a 12-3 conference record.

The Golden Wolves take a break from their MAC Commonwealth schedule with two home non-conference games in the coming week. Alvernia will face Rutgers-
Camden at noon on Sunday, and will host Moravian on Wednesday. The Golden Wolves then resume their conference schedule with a series against Stevenson.

Game One: Alvernia 12, Widener 6
Game Two: Alvernia 7, Widener 3
