Reading, Pa. (Apr. 16, 2018) - Freshman Austin Lucas scored a game-high five goals and junior Andrew Ritchie became the all-time assist leader as Alvernia University (1-11) defeated Rosemont College (1-12) by a 15-10 final Monday evening in non-conference men's lacrosse action at Alvernia.
Alvernia ripped off seven straight goals from the third into the fourth quarter to turn an 8-all tie into a 15-8 lead, and cruised to the win. Â Ritchie handed out two assists on the night to move to 41 for his career passing Tom Novak's (2005-08) career total of 39.
Junior Jarrett Abernethy scored back-to-back goals midway through the third quarter to give Alvernia an 8-7 lead, but Rosemont answered quickly to tie the score. Â Rosemont took an illegal body check penalty shortly after the ensuing faceoff and Abernethy buried his third of the game on the man-advantage for a 9-8 lead.
Abernethy scored the first goal of the fourth quarter for a two-goal lead and the rest of the offense pitched in for five more to take the 15-10 lead with just under five minutes left in the game. Â Lucas and Tyler McDonnell scored twice each and junior Andrew Ritchie added a goal.
Jacob O'Donnell made five saves in net for the win.
Rosemont held a 3-2 lead after the first quarter and a 7-6 lead at halftime. Â Abernethy ripped a shot inside the far post to tie the score eight minutes into the third quarter then willed a shot in while falling in front of the crease for the 8-7 lead.
Rosemont tacked on a pair of goals in the final two-plus minutes.
Alvernia returns to conference action on Wednesday when it hosts Widener University at 7:00.
