Selinsgove, Pa. (Apr. 24, 2018) - Michael Griffin got a pop out to the mound with the bases loaded in the ninth to earn his third save of the season and Alvernia University (26-10) defeated Susquehanna University (12-19) by a 9-8 final Tuesday afternoon in non-conference baseball at Susquehanna.
Zack Landy went five innings and allowed five runs on nine hits, Ben Dubas smacked a 3-run homer, and Franco Esposito went 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
Alvernia broke a 3-3 tie with three runs in the fifth and added two in the sixth. Â Another run in the top of the ninth put the Golden Wolves up 9-6.
Griffin took the ball with one out and two on in the bottom of the ninth and struck out the first batter he saw. Â Susquehanna scored a run on a double and had runners on second and third with two out. Alvernia intentionally walked Cole Luzins to load the bases and Griffin walked the next batter to force in a run before a pop out ended the game.
Dubas hit a 3-run homer with two out in the top of the fifth that gave Alvernia a 6-3 lead. Â Nathan Sides singled through the left side with two out in the sixth to drive in a pair.
Alvernia returns home to host conference foe Lebanon Valley College on Friday to start the final 3-game series of the season. Â The Golden Wolves control their own destiny for top seed in the postseason.
