Justin Thomas had a game and career-high 26 points off the bench, and added a team-high eight rebounds, to lead Alvernia University (4-6, 9-10) to a 87-73 win over Stevenson University (12-6, 6-3) on Wednesday night in MAC Commonwealth men's basketball action at Stevenson.
Alvernia faced a 10-3 deficit early in the first half, but the Golden Wolves slowly chipped away and took a 28-25 lead off of a steal,score, and an and-one opportunity by
Keon Taylor with 3:47 left in the first half.
The Golden Wolves finished the half with a layup from Taylor to take a 36-30 advantage into the break.
The Mustangs came out of the break and made the first basket of the half to come within four, but the Golden Wolves responded with a layup of their own to extend their lead back to six.
The Golden Wolves built their lead to double digits off a three-point shot from
Malik Green, and held a comfortable lead until the Mustangs started to come back.
Stevenson got within six off a layup from Cam Harris, but Alvernia went on a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to build their lead up to 16.
The Golden Wolves didn't look back and went on to take the 87-73 win.
The Golden Wolves had four players reach double-digit scoring. Alvernia's offense was led by
Justin Thomas, who scored a career-high 26 points.
Anthony Dadson was 6-6 from the field and 2-2 form the free throw line to finish the night with 14 points.
Malik Green finished the night with 22 points, and
Keon Taylor added 15 for the Golden Wolves.
Alvernia scored a season high 33 field goals on 63 attempts. The Golden Wolves were 9-20 from beyond the arc and were 12-15 from the free throw line.
With the win, Alvernia moves into a two-way tie for fifth in the MAC Commonwealth with Albright. The Golden Wolves are two games out of fourth place, with the Widener Pride sitting in the four slot with a 6-4 MAC Commonwealth record.
