Owings Mills, Md. (Jan. 23, 2019) – Stevenson University (9-9, 4-5) scored the opening 12 points of the night and never looked back in a 77-55 win over Alvernia University (3-16, 0-10) in MAC Commonwealth women's basketball action on Wednesday evening at Stevenson.
The Mustangs opened up with a quick 12 point run and led 12-0 with 6:41 left in the first quarter.
Torie Zerbe put the Golden Wolves on the board with a layup with, but the Mustangs extended their lead to 15-2 before Alvernia went on a run of its own.
Abbie Zerbe hit the next three buckets for Alvernia, including a three point shot to close the gap to 15-9 and
Jannelle Robinson made a layup with 3:07 to make it 15-11.
Alvernia scored just two points to close out the first quarter and trailed 21-13 after ten.
The Mustangs extended their lead to 15 in the opening 90 seconds of the second quarter. Stevenson held a double-digit lead for the majority of the second half, but the Golden Wolves cut the lead down to eight going into halftime.
The Golden Wolves struggled to find their rhythm coming out of the break, scoring just two points in the opening five minutes of the third quarter as the Mustangs built up a 20 point lead.
The Mustangs held a 19 point lead with 1:35 left in the third quarter, but Alvernia closed out the quarter on a 7-0 run to make it 54-42 heading into the final ten minutes.
The deficit would be too much for the Golden Wolves to overcome as the Mustangs would fall 77-55.
Abbie Zerbe led Alvernia with a career-high 19 points in 31 minutes of action. Both
Dej'hanee McNeal and
Jannelle Robinson each had seven rebounds for the Golden Wolves.
Jonyae Curry scored 21 points to lead the Mustangs. Curry scored her 1,000th career point in the second quarter on a converted free throw.
