Justin Thomas hit a game-tying 3 with 36 seconds left and
Malik Green hit another just before the horn to give Alvernia University (1-1) a 71-70 win over SUNY-Oneonta (0-1) Friday evening in game two of the Quality Inn Tournament at Dewar Arena.
Alvernia advances to the Championship game and will face DeSales University on Saturday at 3:00. The Bulldogs knocked off Wesley College, 95-88, in the first game Friday afternoon.
Alvernia trailed by five points with 90 seconds left against Oneonta. Thomas scored on a jumper then after a Red Dragon miss at the other end Thomas knocked down his fourth 3 of the game to tie the score at 68-all.
Oneonta called time out with 22 seconds left and drew up a play that resulted in a layup and the lead with 13 seconds to go. Thomas missed a quick 3 at the other end, but Green secured the rebound with six seconds left. After a few quick passes, Green had the ball back beyond the arc in the corner. He pump faked the defender, and leaned in for a desperation 3 that found the bottom of the net.
The Red Dragons inbounded the length of the court with a second left and got off a shot, but the corner 3 bounced of the front iron.
Thomas finished with a career-high 31 for the Golden Wolves. Green added 16 points and seven boards, and
Darnell Ransom scored 10.
Oneonta got 15 points from Kevin Mackin.
