Reisterstown, Md. (Nov. 22, 2019) - Stevenson University (5-2-1, 1-2-0) broke a 1-1 tie late in the third period and added an empty net goal in a 3-1 win over Alvernia University (2-5-0, 0-3-0) Friday evening in MAC / UCHC women's hockey action.
The game was scoreless through the first two periods with Alvernia goalie
Julia Beaven making 22 saves through the first 40 minutes.
The Mustangs earned their fifth power play of the game early in the third period and converted to take a 1-0 lead.
The Golden Wolves took three more penalties over the next eight minutes and killed off all three with Beaven making 13 more saves.
Coming out of the final penalty kill, the Wolves went on the power play when Stevenson's Trinity Barcless was whistled for hooking.
Olivia Gilida had a shot blocked then scored, assisted by
Amber Steinhilpert, to tie the game at 1-1 with just under four minutes left in the third.
Gilida and Steinhilpert both had shots saved and a Stevenson counter led to the tie-breaking goal at 17:53 of the third by Jordan Pirello.
Alvernia is off for a Thanksgiving break and returns to action hosting the Keystone Holiday Classic on Friday, December 6 and Saturday, December 7 at The Body Zone.
