Gwynedd-Mercy Tops Alvernia, 93-86

Reading, Pa. (Dec. 17, 2019) - Gwynedd-Mercy University (3-7) scored 34 points in the second quarter and added 31 more in the third on its way to a 93-86 win over Alvernia University (5-5) Tuesday evening in non-conference women's basketball at Alvernia.

The Griffins shot early and often and played high-pressure defense subbing five in and five out every 60-90 seconds and found themselves down 22-11 after the first quarter.

They shot just 12 percent from the floor over the first 10 minutes, but found a bit of a rhythm in the second quarter going 11-for-24 from the floor, including 6-for-16 from the arc in the second quarter.

Alvernia was 7-for-17 from the floor, including an efficient 3-for-5 from the arc and 9-for-10 from the free throw line, and was able to take a 48-45 lead into the halftime break.

The lead changed hands a few times early in the third quarter and Alvernia pushed ahead by six points, 62-65 with just under five minutes on the clock.

Gwynedd-Mercy answered with a 19-5 run over the next 2:31 going 5-for-5 from the arc and limiting Alvernia to just three field goal attempts.  The Griffins lead 76-71 after three.

Alvernia had the gap back down to a point scoring the first four points of the fourth quarter, but couldn't regain the lead.

Gwynedd finished the game 30-for-87 from the floor, 15-for-52 from the arc, and only turned the ball over eight times.  Alvernia was 26-for-69 from the floor, 9-for-26 from the arc, and committed 30 turnovers.

Cathryn Kramer had a huge double-double for Alvernia with 20 points and 16 rebounds.  Gabriella De Vito finished with 16 points, Julia Ewen had 12, and Dee McCormick scored 11.

Gwynedd-Mercy had nine players between 16 and 21 minutes for the game.  Deinse Sacco led the way with 12 points.
