Reading, Pa. (Dec. 4, 2019) - Lycoming College (6-1, 1-0) put together an 11-3 run midway through the second half in a 75-66 win over Alvernia University (3-3, 0-1) Wednesday evening in MAC Commonwealth men's basketball action at Jack McCloskey Court.
Alvernia cut a 6-point deficit down to two, 54-52 with 10:37 left in the game, but went 1-for-7 from the floor over the next 4-plus minutes while Lycoming built a 10-point lead, 65-55, capped by a Mo Terry layup with 5:58 to play.
Alvernia scored five quick points on a 3 from
Justin Thomas and a short jumper from
Malik Green, and had the gap down to four points with 2:32 to play. Lycoming used the entire shot clock on the next possession and Ryan Hollis knocked down a back-breaker from behind the arc to push the Lycoming lead back to seven.
Thomas finished with a game-high 23 points hitting 5-of-9 shots from the arc.Â
Keon Taylor had 15 points and seven assists, and Green finished with 10 points. Lycoming had three players in double figures led by Dyson Harward who scored 19 points to go with 12 rebounds.
Lycoming shot 54 percent from the floor in the first half, but led by just three points at the break, 37-34. Alvernia was 4-for-8 from the arc in the first half and made 11-of-15 free throw attempts--including two from Green with a second left in the half--to keep it close.
Taylor and
Mickeel Allen both scored buckets to start the second half and Thomas' 3 at 17:39 gave Alvernia a brief lead. Lycoming put together a quick run to take a 54-48 lead before Alvernia cut it down to 54-52.
Alvernia continues the conference schedule hosting Widener on Saturday.
