Widener Emerges With 90-85 Double Overtime Win At Alvernia

Zerbe Sisters Both Score Career-High 20

Reading, Pa. (Dec. 7, 2019) - Widener University (8-0, 2-0) outlasted Alvernia University (4-3, 0-2) by a 90-85 final in double overtime Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth Women's Basketball action at Jack McCloskey Court.

Widener had a pair of players scored 30 points apiece and Alvernia had three players at 20 or better with Gabriella De Vito scoring 25 and Abbie and Torie Zerbe scoring 20 each.

De Vito hit a 3 with 15 seconds left in regulation to force the first over, and she and Widener's Devan Rimmer both his 3s in the final minute of overtime to force a second extra period.

Alvernia freshman Cathryn Kramer scored in the post for the first bucket of the second overtime, but Widener answered with back-to-back 3s from Rimmer and Jordan D'Ambrosio to take a lead it didn't relinquish.  The Golden Wolves trimmed the deficit down to a point on three occasions in the final overtime, but couldn't retake the lead.

It's the second time this season De Vito has scored 20 or more in a game.  She scored a career-high 29 points earlier this season at Penn State-Berks.  The 20 point total is a new career high for both Zerbe sisters. Abbie's previous best was 19 at Stevenson last season, and Torie's best was 16 against Hood.

Widener led 14-3 early and held a 21-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.  Alvernia scored eight straight points at one stretch in the second quarter to pull within four points and settled for a 35-31 deficit at halftime.

The Alvernia run continued with a 3 from Dee McCormick to start the third quarter and the Wolves ran off a 16-5 spurt in the third for a 47-40 lead.

Alvernia settled for a four point lead after the third and the fourth quarter included seven lead changes before De Vito's 3 that tied it late.

Alvernia is off for finals week and will return to action next Saturday at Messiah.

Widener 90, Alvernia 85 (2 OT)
