Shaffer Homers Twice As Alvernia Downs Kean, 9-4

Union, NJ (Feb. 18, 2019) - Ian Shaffer drove in five on two home runs and Zack Landy struck out four over fiver innings as Alvernia University (1-1) picked up its first win of the season, 9-4, over Kean University (3-1) at Kean on Monday afternoon.

Alvernia got on the board in the top of the second after Joe Ginder singled to second and Alex Salesky reached home on an error.

The Golden Wolves added two in the top of the fourth when Shaffer hit a two-run home run to left field that also scored Gavin Blankenbiller to give Alvernia the 3-0 advantage.

Kean got two back in the bottom of the fifth, with the Cougars scoring on a wild pitch and a single up the middle.

Alvernia extended its lead back to three runs in the top of the fifth as Nathan Sides drove in Ginder with a single down the right field line, and Matt Briner scored Shaffer with a sac fly to right field.

The Cougars again responded in the fifth, scoring twice on bases loaded walks.

Shaffer put Alvernia up 8-4 in the top of the seventh with a three-run homer to left field, which drove in Nate Breighner and Blankenbiller.

The Golden Wolves added one more in the top of the eighth with Sides tagging up on a Salesky sac fly to left field.

Alvernia's defense, behind Kyle Gaynor on the mound, retired the side both the bottom of the eight and the bottom of the ninth to take the 9-4 win.

Landy went five and a third for the Golden Wolves, striking out four, to earn the win. Gaynor pitched three and a third in relief for Alvernia, allowing just two hits and striking out three, to get the save.

Shaffer led Alvernia's offense with two homers and five RBIs to lead Alvernia's offense. Blankenbiller and Mike Cirilli had three hits each for Alvernia. Salesky, Sides, and Briner finished with an RBI each.

The Golden Wolves return to the field on Saturday when they head to Randolph-Macon for a doubleheader.
