Reading, Pa. (March 15, 2019) - Alvernia University (8-4, 1-0) hit three home runs in a weather-shortened 7-3 win over Widener University (5-7, 0-1) to open its MAC Commonwealth schedule on Friday afternoon at Alvernia.
The game was halted with two outs in the top of the eighth due to lightning and rain in the area, and was called shortly after. The game was reverted back to the seventh inning, which was the last complete.
Alvernia lit up the board in the bottom of the first with an RBI single by
Matt Briner, driving in
Nathan Sides.
Sides put Alvernia up 4-0 in the bottom of the second with a three-run shot, his first of the year, over the left field fence.
The Pride threatened with a three-run top of the third to get within one at 4-3, but Alvernia made it 5-3 in their half of the third with
Gavin Blankenbiller scoring on a failed pickoff attempt.
Ian Shaffer made it 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth with a solo shot to left, his fourth of the year.
Esposito then put Alvernia up 7-3 with a solo shot of his own to left field in the bottom of the seventh.
The game was called shortly after due to weather.
Zack Landy pitched seven innings for the Golden Wolves, striking out five and allowing eight hits.
Alvernia heads to Widener on Saturday to complete the conference series with a doubleheader.
