Alvernia Scores In Five Straight Innings In 12-8 Win At Lebanon Valley

Sides Goes 5-For-6 To Lead Offense

Annville, Pa. (Mar. 24, 2019) - Alvernia University (13-5, 6-0) scored 12 runs over the final five innings in a 12-8 win over Lebanon Valley College (9-7, 2-3) Sunday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth baseball action at LVC to complete a 3-game sweep.

Nathan Sides led the Alvernia offense going 5-for-6 with three runs scored and three RBIs.  Sides drive in two runs with a single to right in the sixth that tied the game at 5-5. Joe Ginder and Ian Shaffer drove in runs in the sixth to put Alvernia up 7-5 and the Wolves never trailed from there.

Gavin Blankenbiller picked up the win in relief of Jake Reese allowing two runs on four hits over four and a third innings.

LVC scored a run in the first inning and added three in the fourth for an early 4-0 lead.

Alvernia cut into the lead with three runs on four hits with two LVC errors in the top of the fifth.  Shaffer dropped a bunt to open the inning and moved all the way to third when the third baseman threw well wide of first.  Mike Cirilli singled in Shaffer and scored on a Sides single. Colin Rieger doubled to drive in Sides for the third run, and Franco Esposito was thrown out at the plate trying to score from first.

LVC scratched out a run in the home half of the fifth on back-to-back two-out hits.

Cirilli was out on a bang-bang play on a punt that left runners at second and third with two out in the top of the sixth.  LVC elected to pitch to Sides with a base open and he ripped the first pitch past a diving second baseman to tie the game.

Shaffer finished the game 4-for-6 with three runs and an RBI.  Four other players had two hits each including Alex Salesky who finished the game with three RBIs.

Alvernia will face Gwynedd-Mercy in a mid-week, non-conference game on Wednesday before opening a 3-game set with Hood on Friday in Frederick, Md.
