Cirilli Slam Powers Alvernia Past Thiel, 6-1

Reese Picks Up First Win

Ft. Myers, Fla. (Mar. 4, 2019) - Junior second baseman Mike Crilli smashed a game-breaking grand slam in the seventh inning and Jake Reese threw six innings in his collegiate debut to earn the win as Alvernia University (4-1) bettered Thiel College (1-1) by a 6-1 final Monday morning in non-conference baseball at Terry Park.

Thiel opened the scoring in the top of the first when Nash Matson was hit by a pitch and later scored on a grounder.  Alvernia matched that in the bottom of the inning when Matt Briner singled in Nate Sides who reached on his 200th career hit--a two-out single to center.

Ian Shaffer tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly from Cirilli in the fifth to give Alvernia a 2-1 lead, and the Golden Wolves opened the seventh with a walk and two singles before Cirilli launched a shot to left to give Alvernia the 6-1 lead.

Reese allowed just three hits and one run with four strikeouts.  He worked around a bit of trouble in the third inning with two runners on and one out getting a strikeout to strand a runner at third, then allowed a two-out double in the sixth.

Aaron Kulp went an inning and allowed a hit with two strikeouts.  Kyle Gaynor pitched the eighth and ninth with five strikeouts.

Shaffer, Sides, and Colin Rieger all had two hits apiece.  Cirilli was 1-for-3 with five RBIs.

Alvernia and Thiel will face off again Tuesday morning at 9:00.
