Reading, Pa. (Apr. 27, 2019) - Alvernia University (24-13-2, 14-6) split with Arcadia University (24-14, 14-6) on Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth baseball action at Alvernia's Angelica Park.
Alvernia won the first game of the afternoon, 5-4, but fell in game two by a 6-4 decision.
In game one, Alvernia went up 2-0 in the bottom of the first on an RBI double to right center by
Matt Briner and an RBI single by
Alex Salesky down the right field line.
The Knights got one back on a sacrifice fly in the top of the second, but Alvernia went back up by two on another RBI single by Briner.
Alvernia added two in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run double by
Mike Cirilli.
The Knights threatened with three runs in the top of the seventh, but Alvernia forced a ground-out to third base to end the threat and take the game one 5-4 win.
Zack Landy went six and a third for Alvernia, allowing five hits, three runs, and striking out one in the win.
Salesky broke Alvernia's caught stealing by record in the top of the third with 41 on his career, breaking Anthony Recker's 14 year old record.
Briner and Salesky each finished with two hits. Briner also scored a run and had two RBIs and Salesky finished with one RBI.
The Knights jumped out a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and went up 4-0 in the top of the third with a three-run home run to left center.
Alvernia began chipping away at Arcadia's lead with sacrifice hit by
Nathan Sides to score
Ian Shaffer, and Cirilli scoring on a passed ball to make it 4-2 in favor of the Knights.
Arcadia added two more in the top of the sixth, but Alvernia got within three on a sacrifice fly by Cirilli in the bottom of sixth, and got within two on an RBI single by
Nick Nutile in the bottom of the seventh. With the
Logan Levan representing the tying run in the bottom of the seventh with two outs, Bryan Gillen made a spectacular diving catch in right field on a fly ball by Levan to end any Alvernia threat.
Nicholas Marotta went five innings for Alvernia in the loss. He gave up nine hits but struck out on the afternoon.
Nutile led Alvernia's offense in game two with a three-for-four day at the plate, an RBI and a run scored.
Alvernia closes out its regular season tomorrow at Arcadia in a rescheduled game from Friday. The winner of the game with be the second seed in the MAC Commonwealth tournament, the loser will be the third seed. Hood closed out its regular season today and is locked in as the one seed.
