Williamsport, Pa. (Apr. 27, 2019) - Alvernia University (24-15-1, 10-6) split its final MAC Commonwealth regular season series with Lycoming College (20-16, 6-10) on a cold and windy Saturday at Lycoming.
The Warriors took game one 2-0, but Alvernia's offense came alive in game two in a 14-2 win.
In game one of the afternoon, Alvernia was held to just three hits and got on base just four times.
Alvernia had a runner on third with two outs in the top of the second, but Alvernia was unable to convert. The Golden Wolves would not get a runner closer the remainder of the game.
Ally Decker went five and two thirds for Alvernia in the loss. She allowed six hits and struck out four.
Morgan Psiuk,
Riley Shields, and
Alyssa Acker all finished with a hit. Shields was also the only Golden Wolf to be walked in game one.
Alvernia's offense turned things around in game two with a five-run second inning and a seven-run seventh inning.
After being retired in order in the top of the first, Alvernia wasted no time in the top of the second.
JoAnnah Lim and Shields both reached on singles to start the inning, and
Emily Carmella drove in Lim when she reached on an error. Acker then drove in Shields with a single to center and Carmella scored on a throwing error during
Kerstin Koenig's at-bat. With the bases loaded, Psiuk drove in the final two runs of the inning with a single up the middle.
The Warriors got one back in the bottom of the third to make it 5-1, but Alvernia added two more in the top of the fourth with an RBI single by
Analise Fouracre and an RBI double by Psiuk.
Lycoming added one run in the bottom of the fifth, and nearly added a second, but
Sarah Bystrycki threw a bullet home to easily catch a runner attempting to score on a single to right.
Alvernia plated seven and batted around in the top of the seventh. With two on and one out, Acker drove a ball to left field to get the scoring starting. Then, with the bases loaded two at bats later, Fouracre singled up the middle to bring in Acker and
Sara Campbell.
Sarah Reinert kept things going with an RBI single to bring in Koenig, and Psiuk single to second to bring in Fouracre. Bystrycki capped off the inning with a two-run double to left center.
Shields then retired the side in the bottom of the seventh to capture the 14-2 win.
Psiuk led the Alvernia offense in game two with three hits and four RBIs. Acker also finished with three hits, drove in two runs and scored three times.
Shields pitched all seven innings for Alvernia, striking out six.
Alvernia advances to the MAC Commonwealth Championship as the three-seed. The Golden Wolves will take on #2 Albright at noon on Friday, May 3rd at Messiah. Arcadia will be the one-seed, Widener is the four-seed, and Lebanon Valley College rounds out the field as the fifth-seed.
