Reading, Pa. (Apr. 9, 2019) - Alvernia University (18-9-1) held Rutgers-Newark (7-12) to just five hits while racking up 20 of their own en route to a 21-2 win over the Scarlet Raiders on Tuesday afternoon at Alvernia.
Alvernia got the scoring spree started with a solo homer to left field to to put Alvernia up 1-0 in after one.
The Golden Wolves added two in the second when
Connor Boyle hit an RBI single to second and
Ian Shaffer added three more for Alvernia with a three-run home run to left to put Alvernia up 5-0.
Alvernia kept up its pace in the bottom of the fourth with Cirilli bringing in Boyle on a sac fly and
Ian Shaffer stealing home.
The Golden Wolves then put up five in the bottom of the fifth.
Alex Salesky started off the inning with a solo shot to center.
Logan Levan and Boyle then hit back-to-back RBI triples, and Shaffer capped off the inning with his second homer of the day - a two-run shot to left - to put the Golden Wolves up 12-0.
Cirili hit his second homer of the afternoon in the bottom of the seventh to put Alvernia up 13-0, and
Colin Rieger and Salesky each drove in a run to cap off the inning.
The Raiders scored two in the top of the eighth, but Alvernia did not let off the pedal. The Golden Wolves scored six in the top of the eighth, with five different players driving in runs to put Alvernia up 21-2.
Tim Carfrey went seven innings for Alvernia, striking out six and allowing just two hits and no runs in the win.
Shaffer and Cirilli led Alvernia's offense with two home runs each. Shaffer drove in five runs for Alvernia.
The Golden Wolves get back to their MAC Commonwealth on Friday when they host Albright College.
