Alvernia Making 14th NCAA Appearance, Heading To SUNY-Cortland

Reading, Pa. (May 13, 2019) - Alvernia University (28-14-2) will play in a 4-team, double-elimination pod at SUNY-Cortland (31-10-1) to open the NCAA Division III Baseball Championships.

Alvernia will face Cortland on Friday at a time to be announced.  Penn State-Harrisburg and Tufts University will face each other in Friday's other game.  The double-elimination pod will continue on Saturday and Sunday at Cortland. The winners of the regional pod will be one of 16 schools that advance to a best-of-3 sectional pod next weekend with those eight winners advancing to the NCAA Division III World Series in Cedar Rapids, Iowa the following weekend.

Alvernia is making its 14th appearance in the NCAA postseason, it's third straight, and the eighth time since 2009.

Alvernia won its third MAC Commonwealth Championship with a 6-5, 11-inning win over Widener University last Thursday.  Senior Kyle Gaynor earned a win and a save in the MAC Commonwealth Championships and was named Most Valuable Player.

SUNY-Cortland is currently ranked 18th in the d3baseball.com Top 25 poll.  The Red Dragons were an at-large selection for the Championships after falling twice to SUNY-Oswego in the SUNYAC Championships.

Senior Nathan Sides, the MAC Commonwealth Player of the Year, is fourth in the nation in batting with a .464 average.
