#2 Alvernia Rolls Into Winners Bracket Final With 10-1 Win Over #3 Arcadia

Carfrey Throws Six Strong For Golden Wolves

York, Pa. (May 2, 2019) - Tim Carfrey threw six strong innings and #2 Alvernia University posted a 5-run fourth inning on its way to a 10-1 win over #3 Arcadia University Thursday evening in Game Two of the MAC Commonwealth Baseball Championships at PEOPLESBank Park.

Carfrey scattered six hits and struck out five.
Mike Cirilli drove in three runs and Nathan Sides, Matt Briner, and Logan Levan drove in two each.

Each of the nine starters in the Alvernia lineup had at least one hit as the Wolves pounded out 15 hits and reached double digits in runs for the 11th time this season.

Alvernia opened the scoring with two runs in the second, added five in the fourth, and tacked on three more in the seventh.  Arcadia scored its lone run in the top half of the ninth inning.

Colin Rieger opened the second with a single and moved up on a sacrifice from Alex Salesky.  Nick Nutile was hit by a pitch and Franco Esposito drew a walk to load the bases. Logan Levan, the Wolves 9 hitter, singled to right to drive in two.  Rieger scored easily from third and Nutile dove in before the tag to score from second.

Mike Cirilli doubled off the wall with the bases loaded in the fourth to put Alvernia up 4-0 and Nathan Sides slapped the first pitch he saw past the drawn in infield to push the lead to 6-0.  Sides moved up to second on a groundout and took third on a wild pitch and scored on Rieger's groundout.

Cirilli doubled in a run in the seventh and Matt Briner drove in two on a one-out single to right.

Carfrey was superb in his sixth start of the season.  He worked around a one-out error in the first stranding runners at the corners and picked off a base runner in the second.  His most stressful inning came after the offense went up 7-0 through four. After an infield single to open the fifth, Carfrey hit back-to-back batters to load the bases and bring up clean-up hitter Phil Pierfy.  Carfrey got him to roll a ball over to Levan at third where he stepped on the bag and threw across the diamond for the inning-ending double play.

Carfrey hit another batter to open the sixth, but erased him on a double play then received a standing ovation in the dugout after getting a final grounder to strand a runner at second.

Christian Burrus went two innings and allowed two base hits.  Matt Brennan threw the ninth to close it.

Alvernia will face #4 Widener University in the winners bracket final Friday morning at 11:00.
