York, Pa. (May 4, 2019) - #4 Widener University hit a go-head grand slam in the top of the eighth to take a 5-2 win over #2 Alvernia University and to force the winner-take-all game on Sunday in the 2019 MAC Commonwealth Baseball Championship, hosted at PeoplesBank Park in York, Pa.
The Golden Wolves went up 1-0 in the bottom of the second when
Nick Nutile singled up the middle to bring in
Matt Briner.
The Pride tied it up when Stephen DeBellis singled through the right side to bring in a run.
Alvernia retook the lead on a
Logan Levan RBI double down the right field line in the bottom of the fourth.
The Pride had a chance to take the lead with a runner on third and one out, but Alvernia got out of the jam forcing a pop out and a line out.
Trailing 2-1 in the top of the eighth, Alvernia walked three of the first four batters to load the bases. Facing an 0-2 count with the bases loaded, DeBellis hit a moon-shot over the Green Monster of PeoplesBank Park to give the Pride the 5-2 lead.
The Pride allowed just one runner for Alvernia over the final six outs as Widener went on to take the 5-2 win.
Zack Landy went seven innings for Alvernia, striking out four and allowing just four hits.
Joey Norton went the distance for the Pride, with his only two strikeouts of the game coming in the bottom of the ninth.
Nutile led Alvernia's offensive efforts with a perfect 4-for-4 performance at the plate, with an RBI.
The Golden Wolves and Pride will meet again on Sunday at 5:00 PM to determine the MAC Commonweatlh Champion and to lock up an NCAA berth.
