Williamsport, Pa. (Feb. 12, 2020) - Alvernia University (9-14, 3-11) fell to Lycoming College (15-8, 8-6) 62-52 on Wednesday night in MAC Commonwealth Women's Basketball action at Lycoming.Â
The Warriors jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three minutes, but, following an Alvernia timeout, the Golden Wolves scored eight straight to take an 8-7 lead with 5:45 remaining in the first quarter.Â
The Warriors and Golden Wolves would trade the lead over the next three minutes, but
Dee McCormick would tie it up for Alvernia with a 3-pointer with 1:22.
A jumper from McCormick put Alvernia up by four with 1:12 remaining, and Alvernia would take a two point lead into the second quarter following two made free throws by the Warriors.
Alvernia extended its lead to seven, 23-16, on an
Abbie Zerbe with 7:18 remaining in the half.
Alvernia's offense would go cold over the final seven minutes of the half, scoring just five points to Lycoming's 18 as the Warriors took a 34-28 lead into the half.
The Warriors maintained at least a three point lead for the entirety of the third quarter, and took an eight point lead into the fourth quarter.Â
Alvernia threatened in the fourth, getting within in three points, 53-50, on a
Gabriella De Vito jumper with two minutes remaining in the fourth, but the Warriors held off Alvernia's late charege to hang on for the 62-52 win.
Torie Zerbe led Alvernia with a 13 point, 10 rebound double-double.
Julia Ewen finished with 12 rebounds on the night for her third straight double-digit rebound game.
With the loss, Alvernia is officially eliminated from playoff contention, but the Golden Wolves have tied for their most MAC Commonwealth wins - currently standing at three wins - since the 2015-16 season. Alvernia is also sitting at nine overall wins for the first time since the 2012-13 season.
