Alvernia Hangs On For 11-10 Win Over Goucher

Towson, Md. (Feb. 24, 2020) - Alvernia University (1-1) held off a late push by Goucher College (1-1) to take an 11-10 win over the Gophers in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Monday evening at Goucher. 

The Gophers struck first with a goal just over a minute into action, but Alvernia matched them with a goal by Hannah Chadwick 20 seconds later to make it 1-1.

Goucher and Alvernia traded goals over the next five minutes before the Golden Wolves went ona 3-0 run over five minutes with goals from Erika Whitmoyer, Natalie Frantz, and Alyson Keene to take the 5-3 lead with 6:18 remaining in the first half.

The Gophers would score the last two goals of the half to make it 5-5 going into the break. 

Alvernia went on another scoring run to open the half, with Gianna Taffo and Keene scoring two goals each over the opening six minutes to put the Golden Wolves up 9-5.

Goucher got to two back with back-to-back goals to make it 9-7 before Alvernia extended its lead back to four with goals from Brittany Defibaugh and Bridget Reynolds

Goucher's Julia Gazzola led a late charge for Gophers with three goals over the next six minutes to put Goucher within one with a minute to play.

The Gophers were granted a free position with 50 seconds remaining with a shot to tie the game, but Alvernia's Katharine Giannaras made the save to seal the 11-10 win for Alvernia.

Reynolds finished the game with a goal and three assists, and Keene finished with three goals to lead Alvernia.

Giannaras made nine saves in net for Alvernia. 

The Golden Wolves return to action on Wednesday with a home game against Elizabethtown.
