Reading, Pa. (March 11, 2020) - Alvernia University (2-3) went on a 10-0 run to close out the first half and open the second half en route to a 17-5 win over Wilkes University (2-5) on Wednesday evening at Alvernia.
The Colonels opened the scoring just over a minute into the game, but
Bridget Reynolds scored two straight to put Alvernia up 2-1 with eight minutes in.
Gianna Taffo then added a man-up goal for Alvernia to put the Golden Wolves ahead 3-1.
Both teams went scoreless over the next ten minutes before Wilkes broke the scoring drought with a goal with 12 minutes remaining in the half.
The Golden Wolves then scored three straight, including two from Taffo, to extend their lead to 6-2.
The Colonels would score once more before Alvernia went off on its 10-0 run to go up 16-3 with 12:18 remaining.
Alvernia would spend most of the final 12 minutes running down the possession clock, but did get one more goal out of
Brittany Defibaugh.
The Colonels scored twice in the final 10 minutes for the 17-5 final.
Taffo and Defibaugh finished with four goals each, and
Erika Whitmoyer finished with a goal and five assists.
Kathrine Giannaras played all 60 minutes making eight saves.
Alvernia is slated to head to Neumann on Saturday for a 4:00 PM game.
