Golden Wolves Split On Day Two In Florida

Clermont, Florida (March 2, 2020) - Alvernia University (5-1) split day two of its spring break trip on Monday with a win five inning 11-1 against Northland (1-7), and a 6-3 loss against Moravian (4-0) at the PFX Spring Games in Clermont, Florida. 

Alvernia opened the day with a bang, plating six runs in the bottom of the first in game one of the day against Northland. Sarah Reinert scored the first run of the inning on a fielding error on Riley Shields' at bat. JoAnnah Lim then scored on a fielder's choice on Kerstin Koenig, and Shields then came home on a double by Devan Hudson. Two at-bats later Allison Kirschner drove in Hudson and Koenig on a single to left. Analise Fouracre drove in the final run of the inning on a triple to the right gap to score Kirschner. 

The Golden Wolves kept their foot on the gas in the bottom of the second, scoring three to go up 9-0. Lim started off the inning with a double to left field, and then her and Shields traded places after Shields doubled to right center. Koenig then hit her first career homer over the right center wall to put the Golden Wolves up 9-0. 

In the bottom of the third, Fouracre hit her first career homer over the center field wall to go up 10-0.

After giving up a run in the top of the fourth, Alvernia scored its final run of the game on a sacrifice line drive by Hope Robinson to score Koenig,

Emma Kropkowski, working in her second inning of relief, retired the side to secure the 11-1 win. 

Koenig led Alvernia's offensive efforts with two hits, three runs scored, and three RBIs. 

Kealey Smith picked up her first win of the season in three innings of work, she struck out six and allowed just one it. Kropkowski worked two innings of relief and struck out two batters.

In game two of the day, Alvernia took an early 1-0 lead after Reinert scored on an error by the Greyhounds.

The Greyhounds took the lead in the bottom of the second on a three-run homer by Lauren Goetz to give Moravian the 3-1 lead.

Moravian then added two to its lead in the bottom of third with two RBI singles to the outfield to go up 5-1.

The Greyhounds added their sixth and final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single to right to go up 6-1.

Alvernia attempted a comeback in the top of the seventh with Shields singling up the middle to drive in Reinert and Lim to cut Moravian's lead down to 6-3. With two on, Koenig represented the tying run at the plate, but she flied out to deep right to put two outs on the board. Hudson then grounded out on a well played defensive effort by Moravian's third baseman to end the threat.

Reinert led Alvernia's offense in game two with two hits and two runs.

Shields went the distance for Alvernia, striking out three.

Alvernia continues its spring break trip on Tuesday with games against Adrian and Roanoke beginning at 10:00 AM.
