Rutgers-Newark Wins ECAC First Round Game, 70-56, Over Alvernia

Green Leads Alvernia With 15

Newark, N.J. (Mar. 4, 2020) - Alvernia University (13-13) shot 32 percent from the floor in the first half and Rutgers-Newark (16-12) built a 36-19 lead at the half on the way to a 70-56 win Wednesday evening in round one of the ECAC Men's Basketball Championships at Newark.

Rutgers-Newark advances to the weekend along with Albright, Hood, Penn State-Behrend, Baruch, and NJCU at top-seeded Gwynedd-Mercy University.

Alvernia held an 8-4 lead on Wednesday after an Avery Walker 3-pointer, but Rutgers-Newark scored 13 straight over the next five-plus minutes to take a 17-8 lead midway through the first half.

The lead was 12 points after Alvernia's Nick Youngkin knocked down a jumper with 45 seconds left, but Rutgers-Newark scored the last five points of the half--including a 3 at the halftime buzzer--for the 36-19 lead.

The lead reached 21 points early in the second half, but Alvernia managed to cut into the gap cutting it to 55-44 with 5:59 to play after a pair of free throws from Keon Taylor.

Alvernia had it down to 10 points on a Malik Green 3 with 3:15 to play, but Rutgers-Newark responded with back-to-back 3s to stay comfortably ahead.

Green led the way for the Golden Wolves with 15 points.  Youngkin scored 14 points, and Taylor added 10. Rutgers-Newark had three players reach double figures led by Jamir Patterson who scored 24.
