Softball Splits Final Day In Florida

Clermont, Florida (March 6, 2020) - Alvernia University (8-4) split on Friday with a 4-0 loss to Plymouth State and a 10-8 win over Roger Williams University to close out its 2020 spring break trip to Clermont, Florida.

In Alvernia's first game of the day the Golden Wolves let up two runs on an RBI single in the top of the first to trail 2-0 early.

The Golden Wolves got their first runner in scoring position of the game on an Analise Fouracre double in the bottom of the third, but Alvernia was unable to drive her in.

Plymouth took advantage of Alvernia mistakes in the top of the sixth to double its lead to 4-0.

The Golden Wolves were retired in order in the bottom of the sixth, but Alvernia's defense shut down Plymouth in the top of the seventh.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Kerstin Koenig hit a ground rule double that hopped over the outfield fence to put herself in scoring position. But, Alvernia lined out and struck out to end the game.

Alyssa Acker, Riley Shields, Fouracre, and Koenig each finished with a hit for Alvernia. Shields' hit, a single to right in the second inning, marked her 100th career hit.

Shields also got the start in the circle, striking out eight in seven innings of work.

In game two against Roger Williams, Alvernia again trailed early after giving up two runs in the bottom of the first.

The Golden Wolves responded with a three run top of the second to take the lead. Acker started the inning by reaching on a fielding error by the pitcher, and advanced to second on error on Koenig's at bat. After Allison Kirschner singled to right to load the bases, Hope Robinson drove a ball up the middle to bring in Acker and Koenig. Three at-bats later, Devan Hudson walked with the bases loaded to bring home Robinson.

The Golden Wolves added to their lead with a six run top of the fourth to go up 9-2 on the Hawks. Hudson drove in two runs on an RBI single to left to bring in Fouracre and Kirschner. Shields then lined out to center to bring in Reinert, and Lim singled to left to bring in Acker. Robinson capped off the inning with a single to right to bring in Lim.

Alvernia would score what would turn out to be a needed insurance run in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Shields to bring home Reinert.

The Hawks then turned the lineup over in their half of the fifth, platting six runs on nine hits to get within two at 10-8.
The Hawks looked to threaten again in the top of the sixth after Alexandra Lombardo doubled to left center to start off the inning. With one out, Taylor Chatowsky flew out to right field, and Kaylin Fehan attempted to tag up, but Hudson threw her out from right field to preserve the two run lead.

Alvernia then retired the side in the bottom of the seventh to take the 10-8 win.

Hudson and Robinson each finished with three RBIs to lead Alvernia's offense.

Kealey Smith picked up the start and the win in four innings of work. Emma Kropkowski came in as relief in the fifth, striking out four and picking up the save.

Alvernia finishes its spring break trip at 6-4. Sarah Reinert led Alvernia with 11 hits and was a perfect nine-for-nine on stolen base attempts.

Alvernia returns to Reading on March 14th and will open its MAC Commonwealth schedule with a doubleheader against Lebanon Valley College.
